Susan York (American, b. 1951)
1:1 Foundation IV, no. 1 (trans-geometric view) @ The Drawing Center, 2017, Graphite pencil, 32 x 52 inches.
Santa Fe-based artist Susan York is known for her use of graphite, both in spare, minimalist drawings and abstract sculptures consisting of blocks of graphite. The present drawing is related to a long-term installment at the Drawing Center in which York replicated in graphite some of the foundation stones visible on the lower level of the building. The drawing reproduces the shape of one of the stones. Removed from its referent, it may evoke contemporary architecture, a landscape, or a section of stratum extracted from a prehistoric rock formation.
